A 20-year-old Lexington man whose body was found along a road near West Columbia had been shot to death, the Lexington County coroner’s office said Monday.

The body of James Wilbur Lybrand III, of 3384 Old Charleston Road in Gilbert, was found along Old Wire Road early Sunday morning.

Lybrand, a convicted felon, had been released from the S.C. Department of Corrections in July and was on probation, state corrections and probations officials said. He was in prison on a conviction for a charge of assault and battery of a high and aggravated nature, records showed.

The circumstances of the shooting as well as the motive for the shooting remain under investigation, a spokesman for Sheriff James Metts said.
