Armed forces are true examples of leadership On this July 4, I would encourage everyone to take time to reflect on the history of our great nation. Freedom is not free, and many have made the ultimate sacrifice for the preservation of freedom. Let us not forget all those who have valiantly and honorably served our country, and those who are serving today throughout the world to preserve freedom and are in harm’s way.- 12:16 AM
Earmarks take advantage of taxpayers Rep. James E. Clyburn in his column Wednesday, “Earmarks serve the public good,” asked, “Should I refuse a funding request from Drew Wellness Center for a youth obesity program for residents of public housing facilities because my daughter was formerly its membership coordinator?”- 12:14 AM
Those with plenty must help the needy I’ve been saddened lately to read about the folks who have generously given to Harvest Hope Food Bank in the past and now find themselves in need of that same food.- 1:45 AM
USC track team helps Iowans combat flood I wanted to be sure I sent a note of thanks to your community and the University of South Carolina track team for the wonderful show of support to the Des Moines, Iowa, area while in town for the NCAA track tournament.- 1:46 AM
Garcia’s mistakes far from typical I simply must take issue with attorney Neal Lourie’s statement concerning his client Stephen Garcia, that he “just happened to make some small mistakes like every other college kid makes.”- 1:47 AM
We’ve got the oil, drill for it now I agree with Rep. Joe Wilson that although we must develop alternative energy sources, and improve conservation, we cannot achieve effective energy independence without drilling for more oil (“A positive strategy for energy independence, June 13).- 1:47 AM
One of the keys to a successful region is a strong, sustainable transportation system — balanced among public transit, an efficient road network and walkable, bikable neighborhoods. The Richland County Transportation Commission has completed its work and after 18 months of intense study has now presented us with an opportunity to determine our own regional destiny.- 1:47 AM
Light rail system needed for Midlands The residents of Columbia should demand better public transportation in this great city. We need to get away from the notion that buses are not for the majority. The citizens of Richland and Lexington counties should demand a light rail public transportation system that would transport the Midlands to a 21st century level of progress.- 12:13 AM
‘Habeas corpus’ prevents unwarranted detention Clearly Mike Sample, in his letter Monday (“What in the ‘habeas corpus’ does it mean?”), does not understand the writ of habeas corpus.- 12:15 AM
The State’s recognition of the well-deserved election of Tim Scott to the Legislature is commendable. But while he is certainly a pioneer in modern times, he can not claim the record of being the first black Republication to serve in the Legislature “since Reconstruction ended in 1877.” Reconstruction began in 1868, when black men and white men were granted the right to vote. Because blacks constituted a majority of the population, black men were elected to a majority...- 12:15 AM
Richland voters toss out experience again Well, Richland County Democrats have done it again. First they toss out the qualified and experienced county Auditor Harry Huntley in 2006 in favor of a political novice whose first act was to try to hire an assistant to do the real work.- 12:14 AM
Senators twiddling while energy burns Why is it that Congress can vote to build bridges to nowhere, but can’t agree on something as obvious as extending tax incentives on solar energy production?- 12:17 AM
While everyone agrees that fire sprinkler systems save lives and that South Carolina needs to take action to encourage their increased use, how the state goes about it, and who pays for it, seems to be the current battle line.- 12:17 AM
Rutherford should find safer activity I read with a certain amount of amazement and interest the article about state Rep. Todd Rutherford and his questioning Columbia’s police chief about security at a club he visits. The club requires 32 security guards, some armed, to try to control their visitors. Repeat, 32 guards, some armed. The club was in the news recently for a large fight that broke out, and guns were fired. It required a massive police effort to quell the violence and disturbance...- 12:19 AM
Water limits don’t stop new construction Once again I see water restrictions for the Northeast are in effect. We in the Northeast pay more for water and sewage than someone in the city limits of Columbia.- 1:47 AM
Taxpayers have no more to give Everyone knew when they took the school taxes off of residential property that the whining would start. School districts would complain they don’t have enough to run the schools, we need more, etc.- 1:47 AM
My senator, Jim DeMint, has aligned with a group of six other Republican senators to put a hold on what is potentially the most significant global health bill of a lifetime. The bill, known as PERFAR, has passed the House (HR.5501), has the support of the president and has more than 60 votes in the Senate (S.2731). Thanks to extensive grassroots work in the early primary states of South Carolina, New Hampshire and Iowa, there is consensus support for America to lead the fight against infectious disease...- 1:47 AM
Shealy wants true reform in S.C. Living in Lexington County and observing the present state Senate election, I feel obliged to comment on the manner of the candidates. Sen. Jake Knotts slings endless innuendo including that Katrina Shealy is the shill of some New York godfather, while crying that he is being fouled by negative campaigning. Mrs. Shealy’s campaign ads all state facts that are part of public record. Who is the mudslinger?- 12:17 AM
Carter made good call on Club Level I appreciate the stand that Columbia Police Chief Tandy Carter has taken regarding the situation at the nightclub Club Level.- 12:17 AM
