S.C. woman takes home ‘Jeopardy’ thousands

Gail Snyder wins $17,200 in two nights, including winning one night

MYRTLE BEACH — Gail Sneyers’ run on “Jeopardy” ended after two nights, but not until she had won $17,200.

On the syndicated game show’s episode that aired Wednesday, the Myrtle Beach resident finished second among three contestants with $2,000, after winning the round Tuesday with $15,200.

Sneyers said she’ll continue watching the show to see how her competitors fare. “I’m looking forward to seeing all the other people I met,” she said.

Sneyers’ winnings, after taxation, will have multiple uses.

“I’m going to buy peace of mind by paying off some bills,” she said. “When the show taped, I spent some extra days there since I’d never been to California, and then we flew back to Atlanta, where we’d already planned a trip, to see Bruce Springsteen on April 24, and traveled to Charlotte and Greensboro to see two more Springsteen shows, so I spent quite a bit of the money before I even knew how much I’d be taking home.”

Sneyers said the second night had some slower moments, such as when all three players did not know the reply to a clue posed by host Alex Trebek.

Seeing herself on television has added new perspective for Sneyers, she said, “Because I can see the studio in my head.”

For instance, she played one game next to a man well over 6 feet tall. “They make us stand on boxes so we’re all even,” said Sneyers, who stands 5 feet 3 inches.

The studio set was smaller than she expected. She compared it to a theater in a small multiplex studio, holding about 100 audience members.

Also, all contestants foot their own travel bill, but with pre-arranged hotel discounts, said Sneyers, a Myrtle Beach Trips administrative assistant. She figures that’s why each third-place finisher walks off with $1,000, to help offset expenses.

Getting on “Jeopardy” capped a quest for Sneyers, who had auditioned for the quiz show three times since the late 1990s.
