Columbia City Council members place a priority on creating and maintaining affordable housing in the city. In HUD’s terms, a family that can afford the housing they live in is one that pays no more than 30 percent of its annual income for that housing. That includes the mortgage payment or rent and utilities. Among three announced affordable housing options in Columbia:

The Village at River’s Edge: A yet-to-be-constructed community of 250 single-family homes and town houses in north Columbia, at McCrae and Gibson streets. Developer Steve Benjamin has joined up with the city to make the project happen. For details, visit www.thevillageatriversedge.com.

Belmont Initative: This development, sponsored by the Eau Claire Development Corp., has 25 lots available with prices ranging from $105,000 to $115,000. Three houses have been sold, and two are under construction. For details, call (803) 988-8052.

Rosewood Hills: This south Columbia community is under construction now. It is targeted to both low-income and moderate-income working families and will include a mix of homes, apartments and shops. Among features are 60 single-family homes. For details, call the Housing Authority, (803) 254-3886, ext. 220
