DHEC and EPA officials are serving criminal search warrants at Columbia’s wastewater treatment plant today as part of a joint investigation involving records keeping, state and federal officials said.

The officers have been there since 8 a.m. today. The road leading to the treatment plant is closed. City officials, including City Manager Charles Austin, are at the plant monitoring the situation.

“We will cooperate fully,” Columbia Mayor Bob Coble said.

Laura Niles, an EPA spokesperson, said the city of Columbia is named as the defendant on the search warrant.

She said the agency usually gets involved in criminal matters through complaints from residents or current and former employees.
