The State Law Enforcement Division is investigating the death of a 4-year-old boy who was strangled when he became entangled in a backyard play set.

The death is believed to be accidental. However, Newberry County Sheriff Lee Foster said Tuesday the case was handed off to SLED to adhere to laws that require child deaths be investigated.

Reports indicate Chavis Berley was playing outside of a relative's home on Schumpert Road in Prosperity when the accident happened at about 2 p.m. Monday.

Foster says the boy's grandmother tried to revive the boy. He was taken to Newberry County Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
