Historic Sandhill Mercantile burns to ground

The Sandhill Mercantile, an early 20th-century landmark along U.S. 378, burned down this morning.

Columbia fire officials have not identified a cause for the blaze, which erupted shortly before 5 a.m.

Victor and Gwen Lattuca, a couple from Elgin, had worked for four months preparing to restore the one-time country store.
