Vikings edge Bengals for 4-4A golf honors

Spring Valley emerged victorious at the Region 4-4A champion golf match on Wednesday at Columbia Country Club. The Vikings beat out second-place Blythewood by six strokes during the 36-hole, one-day event, taking a 299-302 lead over the Bengals at the end of the first 18-hole phase and picking up three more stokes in the second round.

Spring Valley and Blythewood are the 4-4A qualifiers for the 16-team state tournament, scheduled for May 11-12 at Furman.

Ben Fogler and Shawn McKinney led the Vikings to the title by posting identical tournament scores of 144. Fogler went 73-71, while McKinney was 72-72. The SV duo finished three strokes behind region medallist Eric Eberspeaker of Rock Hill, who went 71-70 – 141. Roger Turner and Eric Eaton joined their teammates on the all-region team. Eaton finished fifth at 148, while Turner’s score of 155 was good for 10th place on the individual list.

Blythewood also placed four on the all-region team. Damon Postal led the way with a fourth-place score of 147, Parker Allen was sixth at 150, Shane Rogan was seventh at 151 and Josh Lorenzetti was tied for eighth at 154. Lorenzetti made a dramatic reversal in the second round to earm all-region status, firing a 72 after a blow-up 82 on the first 18 holes.

Ridge View finished fifth in the six-team field. The Blazers leader was Brett Foltz (83-30 – 163).
