MCCLATCHY NEWSPAPERS

Once again, the South Carolina men’s basketball team has a new director of operations.

Robert Knotts, who served as the coordinator for operations for the team this past season, is no longer with the program, a team spokesman confirmed.

He quickly was replaced by L.J. Hepp, who resigned last week as the coach at Panther Creek (N.C.) High. Hepp’s former athletics director at the school told the Cary (N.C.) News that Hepp was accepting the operations job at USC.

Hepp’s hiring was expected to be made official today when coach Darrin Horn meets with the media. Attempts to reach Knotts were unsuccessful.

Hepp served on the staff at Stanford and Tulsa after starting his career as a graduate assistant at North Carolina. He becomes the fourth man in four years to hold the operations job at USC.

Knotts was hired last year by Horn after serving as the top assistant at Ferrum, a Division III school in Virginia where he played from 1998-2003.

Horn now will be looking to hire a new director of operations, a standard administrative position that exists at major college basketball programs. The position was an almost dual role this past season, with Neill Berry acting as director of player development.

Berry was promoted to assistant coach last month after Scott Cherry became the coach at High Point.
