Updated 12:45 p.m.
A 44-year-old man died of injuries received at a house fire this morning on Cane Lake Drive, but another occupant of the house escaped through a bathroom window.

Troy Scott died at Palmetto Health Richland after being transported there by medics, Richland County Coroner Gary Watts said.

Columbia deputy fire chief Aubrey Jenkins said he did not have the name of the woman who survived, but he said the fire at the single-family brick house apparently started shortly after 5 a.m.

Firefighters discovered Scott’s unconscious body inside the house, brought him outside and attempted to resuscitate him, Jenkins said.

The fire apparently started in the kitchen area, because that is the where the damage was concentrated, Jenkins said.

"There were no smoke detectors," he said. "Anytime, you have a smoke detector, it’s an early warning device."

He estimated the house had about $30,000 worth of damage. The cause is under investigation.
