Columbia police are investigating an apparent single-traffic fatality collision in which an as-yet unidentified man in his 20s was found near a wrecked car early Sunday morning.

An autopsy on the man, who appears to be of Hispanic origin, will be performed Monday, said Richland County coroner Gary Watts.

“Apparently he was ejected from the vehicle,” Watts said.

The car was found on an embankment where I-277 meets Farrow Road, according to a city police spokesman.

The man was found nearby on the edge of a wooded area and died shortly after being transported to Palmetto Health Richland, authorities said.

Police were investigating reports of others who might have been in the car leaving the scene after the accident, the spokesman said.

Other details of the accident, which happened shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday, remain unclear, the spokesman said.
