The spring after Hugo, on the west side of my husbands familys beach home on Pawleys Island, I noticed a small tomato plant coming up. I put some bricks around it to make sure it wasnt mowed down.
By June, it had spread over about four square feet of the backyard and was covered with the most delicious already-slightly-salty cherry tomatoes any of us had ever had. When we left for the summer, I left a note for the renters to enjoy the Hugo tomatoes, glad to share the wealth that Hurricane Hugo had shared with us
Ive never had a tastier cherry tomatoa small consolation, literally, for the memories of so much destruction from the autumn before.
