Building new business, new terminals and deepening the Charleston Harbor channel are highlights of a new strategic plan for the South Carolina State Ports Authority.

The agency announced Tuesday it has updated the plan after eight months of study.

Goals include market and infrastructure development, building productive business relationships and remaining financially self-sufficient.

The plan calls for increasing break bulk cargo - cargo shipped in boxes, crates and the like - in Charleston and Georgetown, as well as completing the first phase of a new terminal at the old Charleston Naval Base.

It also includes a Charleston Harbor channel deepening and working on a new Savannah River terminal South Carolina is building with Georgia.
