GREENVILLE - School authorities say they found an unloaded gun in an eighth-grade girl's book bag after a bus driver overheard the girl talking about the weapon.

The bus driver called ahead Thursday morning to Hughes Middle School in Greenville, and an assistant principal and police officer searched the girl's bag, finding the handgun and bullets.

District spokesman Oby Lyles said the girl was suspended, as were two other students who gave her the gun at school earlier this week.

Lyles said a message has been sent home to parents.
