State Rep. Thad Viers said Monday he will ask House Republican leaders to form a special committee if, as expected, impeachment charges are filed against Gov. Mark Sanford.

Typically, the bill would be sent to a House constitutional law subcommittee, chaired by state Rep. Greg Delleney, R-Chester. Delleney has said he plans to file an impeachment resolution today.

However, Viers, R-Horry, says Delleney's on-the-record position favoring impeachment could prevent Sanford from receiving a fair hearing.

"Chairman Delleney has prejudiced himself in this process," Viers said. "He is going to impeach Sanford regardless of the facts. ... He's treating it like a done deal."

Viers said he will ask House Speaker Bobby Harrell, R-Charleston, to form a special committee to handle impeachment. Viers said that committee should be bipartisan and could be made up of committee or subcommittee chairmen.

Viers also suggested Harrell could send any impeachment bill to another committee not led by Delleney.
