Ethel Hayes, a breast cancer survivor for more than a decade, was a winner of a makeover contest sponsored by Kenneth Shuler Schools of Cosmetology as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October. Hayes was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1997 and had a simple mastectomy in September that year. She has been cancer-free since.

Makeover candidates were required to be either a breast cancer patient or survivor.

Among the services Hayes received were a manicure, pedicure, facial, hand massage, hair cut, hair color and hair styling. The prize package was valued at $150. After receiving her new look, Hayes participated in a photo shoot donated by Teresa Spires, owner of PhotoSolutions of S.C., in West Columbia.
