First lady Jenny Sanford is supporting Lexington state Rep. Nikki Haley for governor, Sanford said in a letter of support released by the Haley campaign.

Sanford, who helped manage her husband Gov. Mark Sanford’s campaigns for Congress and governor, said Haley stands out in the five- candidate Republican field mainly for her history of fiscal conservatism and her advocacy of government restructuring.

"Our state’s future is too important to leave to just another go-along-get-along career politician. Nikki Haley is the best person to be South Carolina’s next Governor," Ms. Sanford said.

Haley, a 37-year-old hospital executive, is battling four other seasoned Republicans for the GOP nomination. U.S. Sen. Gresham Barrett of Oconee, Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer of Greenville, Berkeley state Sen. Larry Grooms and S.C. Attorney General Henry McMaster are also seeking the nomination.
