State Attorney General Henry McMaster, a Columbia Republican running for governor, released a video Thursday touting his willingness to protect religious freedom.

During the video, McMaster said he helped to defend the town of Great Falls in a lawsuit brought by a self-described Wiccan witch and the American Civil Liberties Union. The town opened its council meetings with a Christian prayer until a federal judge told it to stop.

"If the ACLU sues you, call me up. We'll defend you," McMaster says in the video.

The video comes on the heels of a decision earlier this week by another federal judge who ruled that a proposed Christian "I Believe" S.C. license tag is unconstitutional. McMaster filed court papers, endorsing the license plate, which was authorized by the S.C. General Assembly last year.

While Republican Lt. Gov. Andre Bauer, who is also running for governor, has asked McMaster to appeal the ruling, McMaster cannot, his office said Thursday. That’s because McMaster is not a party to the lawsuit, said spokesman Mark Plowden.
