Students at Columbia International University take their religious studies seriously, but this week they notched up their attention to holy scripture.
Undergraduates decided to read the Bible out loud, starting Tuesday, in a relay that will end with the reading of Revelation this afternoon. Most spoke in 15- or 30-minute increments at a site set up outside the student center.
"Every word, every genealogy, every sacrifice, every king in the Old Testament" will be spoken out loud, said CIU spokesman Bob Holmes.
"Each student is bringing their own copy," he said. "Each student is probably bringing their favorite translation."
Holmes said CIU senior Will Somerville helped organize the event, after experiencing last week's chapel theme on the authority of scripture, one of the core values of the private Bible college.
Somerville said he wanted "to delight in Scripture and rejoice in it."
The readings began at 7 a.m. each morning, with a break for morning chapel, and concluded at 11 p.m., with some faculty and staff taking reading turns.
CIU is an evangelical Bible college, graduate school and seminary, with an enrollment of 950. It is located in North Columbia off of Monticello Road.
