Don Fowler, former chairman of the Democratic National Committee and the S.C. Democratic Party, has been appointed chairman of the board of trustees at Voorhees College.
Fowler has been on Voorhees' board since 1983.
"I accept the board's charge as both a privilege and a challenge," Fowler said. "Voorhees College has been a great, contributing institution in South Carolina that has experienced some difficulty in recent years. But with our exceptionally fine president, Cleveland Sellers, our best years are ahead of us."
Both Sellers and Fowler have ties to the University of South Carolina.
Sellers was director of USC's African-American Studies Program before leaving for Voorhees in 2008.
Fowler is as an adjunct professor of U.S. politics in USC's political science department. He is also chairman of Fowler Communications, a public relations and government affairs company in Columbia.
Fowler succeeds Marshall Bass, who served on the Voorhees board since 1995.
The board also voted to add several new members, including:
- State Sen. John Scott, D-Richland
- State Rep. Harold Mitchell, D-Spartanburg
- Virginia Crocker, judicial director at the S.C. Workers' Compensation Commission
- Michael A. Smith, a student at the Medical University of South Carolina
- Veronica Gromada, an associate attorney for Walmart stores.
