Record rainfall and tropical storm-force winds socked South Carolina on Wednesday as a low-pressure system rolled through the state.

Daily records for rainfall were recorded in Greenville-Spartanburg (3.11 inches, topping the 3.06-inch record set in 1927), Charleston (2.75 inches, topping .70 inch in 1981) and Columbia (1.99 inches, topping 1.30 inches in 1896).

Wilmington, N.C. (2.70 inches), Augusta (2.39 inches) and Savannah (2.72 inches) also set records.

Today's news video

Localized flooding was reported in the late afternoon in the Upstate and along the coast around 8 a.m. and 9 p.m., coinciding with high tides.

Flood watches were in effect on several state rivers Thursday, including the Congaree in the Midlands. Rising water could cover portions of the Cayce and West Columbia riverwalks, and some of the trails at Congaree National Park likely will be under water this weekend.
