Dreher, RNE close Chick-fil-A with wins

Richland Northeast and Dreher did not bring home any championship trophies from the eighth annual Chick-fil-A Classic. But both Midlands-area schools had solid showings in the nationally recognized tournament.

The host Cavaliers finished third in the Classic I bracket with a 57-49 victory against Vance, N.C. Tuesday afternoon. Jared Guest scored 21 points to go along with eight rebounds.

Richland Northeast (7-2) trailed by six in the first half but used an 18-8 run to take control.

The Cavaliers led 32-27 at the half and never trailed in the second half as the Cougars (8-2) shot 23.8 percent in the final 16 minutes.

Donald Tention added 11 points for RNE. Braxton Ogbueze led Vance with 12 points.

Dreher 63, Fairfield Central 56

The Blue Devils trailed by 21 points but used an 16-3 over the final three minutes of the first half to trail 29-23 at the break.

Chris Brown had his second consecutive strong outing with 25 points with five 3-pointers to give Dreher third place in the Classic II bracket.

The senior guard had seven points during the closing run in the first half and then added 14 points in the second half for the Blue Devils (12-2).

The Griffins (7-4) led by nine in the second half but Dreher went on a 16-5 run to take the lead for good with just over seven minutes remaining.

Quayshun Hawkins added 14 points for Dreher. Mikel Trapp scored 18 for Fairfield Central and Marquis Robinson added 13 points with 12 rebounds.

Norfolk Christian 52, Trinity Christian 41

James McAdoo, Michael Murray and Mario Nixon scored 14 points each in leading the Raiders (4-2) to a fifth place finish in the Classic II bracket.

Norfolk Christian led 31-19 at the half.

Steven Johnson led the Crusaders (8-3) with 11 points and USC signee Damontre Harris added 8 points, six rebounds and five blocks.

The Senators (7-1) hung on for fifth place in the Classic I bracket. Adoplhus Washington led three players in double figures with 23 points and 12 rebounds.

The Knights (7-2) got 28 points from Jaylen Beckham but lost the lead on a Washington layup with 1:31 remaining.

The Raiders (5-5) salvaged a victory to earn seventh place in the Classic II bracket. Dennis Rowe scored 27 points and Keenan scored the final nine points of overtime.

The Blazers (3-8) led nearly the entire way but Rowe made two free throws with 19 seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. Eric Washington added 18 points for Keenan.

Jamar Gillespie and Cameron Lee scored 14 and 13 points respectively to lead Ridge View.

The Diamonds turned a one-point halftime deficit into a runaway victory and a seventh place finish in the Classic I bracket. Lower Richland (5-5) limited the Yellow Jackets (5-4) to five field goals in the second half.

Malcolm Rhett led the way with 21 points and 12 rebounds.

Josh Clinkscales led Irmo with 11 points.
