Scott Earley is leaving his position as head football coach and athletics director at Chapin High after one year and is a finalist to take a similar position at Lexington High, according to district spokespersons.

"(Coach Earley) has confirmed verbally his intentions not to return next year to Chapin High School," said Buddy Price, spokesperson for the Lexington-Richland School District 5.

Price said Earley informed Chapin principal Mike Satterfield and superintendent Herbert Berg on Thursday.

Earley, who led the Eagles to a 7-4 record in his only season at Chapin, is a finalist for the Lexington High position, said Mary Beth Hill, spokesperson for Lexington 1.

Hill said the Lexington 1 school board must give its approval before an offer is made.

Hill said Earley on Thursday met with superintendent Karen Woodward as part of the interview process.

The earliest an offer could be made is Tuesday night, but more likely it will be Wednesday morning, Hill said.

Before coming to Chapin, Earley led Myrtle Beach to the 2008 Class 3A championship and amassed a 72-29 record in eight seasons.

He received a one-year contract worth $96,000 when Lexington-Richland 5 hired him in May 2009.

Reached on Friday afternoon, Earley declined to comment.

At Lexington, retiring head football coach and athletics director Allen Sitterle received a starting salary of $92,000 when he was hired in 2007. He is making $101,260 this year, according to a South Carolina School Districts survey.

Sitterle posted a 20-17 record with the Wildcats. He was 5-7 in 2009.

"Our expectation is that we will be receiving a written resignation in the near future," Price said.

But Lexington 5 is not gearing up for a new hiring search, and the door is not closed to Earley, he said.

"He certainly has the right to come back and ask for that to be withdrawn; that would be the case for anybody."
