Ranking the ACC signing classes

Published: February 4, 2010

National rankings are based on an average by Rivals.com and Scout.com.

1. FLORIDA STATE

NATIONAL RANK: 10

STAR OF CLASS: CB Lamarcus Joyner, Miami

THE BUZZ: The Seminoles finished strong, and while new coach Jimbo Fisher is an offensive guy, his first class is heavy on defense.

2. MIAMI

NATIONAL RANK: 20.5

STAR OF CLASS: RB Storm Johnson, Loganville, Ga.

THE BUZZ: In a deep signing class, Hurricanes signed a couple highly rated offensive linemen and several big-time defensive players.

3. CLEMSON

NATIONAL RANK: 20.5

STAR OF CLASS: WR Martavis Bryant, Anderson

THE BUZZ: Nabbing LB Justin Parker made for a strong finish to a deep class heavy on defense.

4. VIRGINIA TECH

NATIONAL RANK: 28.5

STAR OF CLASS: S Nick Dew, Virginia Beach

THE BUZZ: Hokies didn't have much room, but still did well in-state, inking four linemen who were four-star prospects.

5. NORTH CAROLINA

NATIONAL RANK: 30.5

STAR OF CLASS: G James Hurst, Indianapolis

THE BUZZ: Tar Heels finished strong, getting a couple late flips, including WR Sean Tapley from South Carolina and RB Giovannia Bernard from Notre Dame.

6. N.C. STATE

NATIONAL RANK: 37.5

STAR OF CLASS: OT Robert Crisp, Raleigh, N.C.

THE BUZZ: Not a star-studded group, but Wolfpack did well in-state. Crisp is well-regarded.

7. MARYLAND

NATIONAL RANK: 39.5

STAR OF CLASS: DB Titus Till, Upper Marlboro, Md.

THE BUZZ: Despite a 2-10 season, offensive coordinator (and recruiting specialist) James Franklin helped the Terrapins get a solid class.

8. GEORGIA TECH

NATIONAL RANK: 41.5

STAR OF CLASS: DE Anthony Williams, Union Grove, Ga.

THE BUZZ: Evidently, it's still hard to recruit for the triple option, but Paul Johnson has showed he doesn't necessarily need the best players to win.

9. BOSTON COLLEGE

NATIONAL RANK: 44.5

STAR OF CLASS: WR Shakim Phillips, Wayne, N.J.

THE BUZZ: Phillips and QB Chase Rettig have a chance to play early, while rest of class is solid.

10. WAKE FOREST

NATIONAL RANK: 64.5

STAR OF CLASS: DB A.J. Marshall, Durham, N.C.

THE BUZZ: A bunch of three-star recruits, many of whom, in typical Jim Grobe style, will redshirt.

11. VIRGINIA

NATIONAL RANK: 66.5

STAR OF CLASS: OL Morgan Moses, Fork Union, Va.

THE BUZZ: New coach Mike London held together a small class of 17 players, including four quarterbacks.

12. DUKE

NATIONAL RANK: 70

STAR OF CLASS: ATH Joshua Snead, Smithfield, N.C.

THE BUZZ: Blue Devils signed 10 skill-position players, as coach David Cutcliffe tries to bring more speed into program.
