Rising waters are threatening low-lying areas surrounding Lake Wateree as water levels continued to swell over the weekend because of recent heavy rains.

The lake, which has shorelines in Kershaw, Lancaster and Fairfield counties, crested Sunday morning, and water levels are expected to gradually decline from now on, according to the Lake Wateree Association.

However, additional rain is forecast for the Catawba River basin for Tuesday, and there is the potential for more precipitation later in the week.

With the ground already saturated from rains, there will be a high probability of flooding in low-lying areas, the association said.

The 13,000-acre Lake Wateree was created in 1920 and is one of the state's oldest lakes.
