Heathwood Hall ended up with a share of the SCISA Region 1-3A boys basketball championship with a 49-23 win over Cardinal Newman on Thursday, but Ben Lippen’s quest for piece of the title was doomed by a 54-51 loss at Augusta Christian.

The Highlanders had no trouble with the Cardinals as Mac Whalen and Corey Littlejohn shared the bulk of the scoring load with 19 points apiece. Heathwood Hall and St. Joseph’s ended up as co-champions with 8-2 region records. The Highlanders carry a 20-5 record and a six-game winning streak into the state playoffs that begin late next week.

Ben Lippen, meanwhile, carried a 40-33 lead into the fourth quarter last night, only to see the host AC Lions go on a 21-11 roll over the final eight minutes to derail the Falcon title express.
