Chapin pins pair of wrestling titles

ROCK HILL - Two Chapin wrestlers were crowned state champions, including the unbeaten Stuart Hope, and Irmo's T.J. Dudley beat White Knoll's Phillip Austin in an all-Midlands match to win an individual title in Class 4A at the state wrestling championships on Saturday.

Chapin's Hope, 52-0 entering the state tournament, cruised through the field to win at 112 pounds after winning the state title at 103 last season. He was joined as a Chapin state champion by Nate Polley at 130 pounds, while Lugoff-Elgin's Alonzo Grant won the 140-pound title.

Dudley beat Austin to win the 171-pound title in Class 4A for the Yellow Jackets, while Lexington's Alex Morales won the title at 160. Columbia's Trey Leonard won the 171-pound title in Class A.

Lugoff-Elgin had three wrestlers finish second; Stephen Boneparte (160), Will Connell (171) and Max Fowler (189). The Demons' Tony Murphy was third at 125, while Chapin had three fourth-place finishers in Chase Owens (135), Cody Brundage (145) and Scott Swindall (152).

In Class 4A, Lexington's Garrett Corbett (119) and Scott Tyndale (125) each finished fourth while Irmo had two other winners in Kyle Manross (third at 130) and Aaron Bell (fourth at 145). White Knoll's Jamal Lackey was third at 135 and Dutch Fork's Collin Studemyer was fourth at 130.
