A federal grand jury has indicted a 49-year-old Lexington County woman on charges of bank fraud, mail theft and aggravated identity theft.

The indictment says Linda Hamel Bacon, 49, of Lexington, stole a driver’s license from a car, then presented the stolen license to pass checks she had stolen from other peoples’ mailboxes.

Investigators from the Lexington County Sheriff’s Department and the U.S. Postal Service determined that $6,000 was stolen in all, said acting U.S. Attorney Kevin McDonald today.

The incidents took place in November and December of last year, McDonald said.

If convicted on all charges, Bacon faces a mandatory minimum sentence of four years and a maximum possible sentence of 69 years in federal prison.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Nathan Williams of the Columbia office is prosecuting the case.
