Lake City's Justin Gentry has been named head coach of the Chapin football program.
The board of trustees of Lexington-Richland 5 Schools voted last night to hire Gentry, who will also serve as assistant athletics director. Longtime Chapin teacher and coach Ronnie Wessinger was named to the athletics director position.
Wessinger and Gentry replace Scott Earley, who served as head football coach and athletics director for one year, and will take a new position at Lexington High in June.
Gentry is a teacher, adminsitrative assistant and head football coach at Lake City, where he guided the Panthers to an 11-2 re-cord and the third round of the Class 3A playoffs in 2009.
Wessinger, a Clemson graduate, has been a social studies teacher at Chapin for 18 years, and for the past 15 years has been the offensive line coach for Eagles football.
Incoming Chapin principal Akil Ross is enthusiastic about the hires.
“Roniie Wessinger has shown leadership in the classroom and on the field. I’m excited about his ideas and vision for the athletics program,” Ross said.
“The Chapin community is fortunate to have coach Gentry,” he added. “His dedication to excellence in athletics and academics will make him a great addition to our school.”
Wessinger and Gentry begin their posts July 1.
