Sandlapper baseball tournament opens on Saturday

Published: April 2, 2010

The annual Sandlapper spring break baseball tournament begins Saturday with games at three of the four tournament sites – Brookland-Cayce, Airport and Gilbert.

Brookland-Cayce, Lexington and Swansea are in the two three-team pools at B-C. Aiken draws the host Bearcats at 5:30 p.m., after facing Swansea at 3 p.m. In the other pool, Lexington opens against Midland Valley at 10 a.m.

Airport’s pool features Blythewood and Fairfield Central. F-C and Blythewood open the action at 10 a.m., followed by a game against host Airport at 12:30 p.m.

The Gilbert branch of the tournament, for smaller public school and SCISA teams is self-contained. First-round games include WW King vs. Gilbert at 10 a.m. SCISA powerhouse Laurens Academy faces Pelion at 12:30 p.m. and Batesburg-Leesville at 3 p.m. Cardinal Newman, the other Midlands entry at Gilbert, begins play on Monday against Pelion (12:30 p.m.) and Batesburg-Leesville (3 p.m.).

The Camden site is down to just two teams – Camden and Lugoff-Elgin – after the announcement a few days ago that Lakewood had closed down its varsity program from the season. The archrival Bulldogs and Demons play a doubleheader on Monday, starting at 4 p.m.

Championship round games for the teams at the B-C, Airport and Camden sites start on Tuesday and conclude on Wednesday. Placement games at Gilbert will be on Wednesday.
