Longtime Newberry High head football coach Sam Baird is retiring, multiple media outlets reported Friday.

Baird came to the school in 1978 and took the head job in 1989, leading the Bulldogs to a 161-88 record during those 21 years.

He is a native of Clover.

The Newberry Observer reported that Baird announced his retirement Thursday.
