The fire that destroyed a building in a Lexington County apartment complex caused $950,000 in damage, the Lexington County Fire Service reported.

The blaze started around 7:30 p.m. Friday when someone tossed a cigarette butt from a back porch on the first floor, the fire service reported. The cigarette ignited pine straw in landscaping.

The fire traveled up an exterior wall and into the building’s attic, the fire service said. There were no fire walls in the attic, which was of lightweight truss construction.

The building did not have a sprinkler system or a fire alarm system. Individual apartments did have smoke detectors, the fire service said.

The fire destroyed 16 apartment units in one building and damaged the facade of two other buildings.

The damage estimate does not include residents' personal property.
