Baseball, softball playoffs continue tonight

Second round play in the Upper and Lower State baseball and softball playoffs continues on Monday.

There are just three homes games on the slate for the various Midlands entries.

Brookland-Cayce and Mid-Carolina play at home with the opportunity to become the only unbeaten teams in their respective Elite Eight baseball tournaments. The only Midlands softball team at home tonight is Brookland-Cayce, which needs a win to stay alive.

The Bearcats (24-5) edged Lake City 7-6 in Saturday’s Class 3A Lower State opener, and host Region 5 rival South Aiken tonight. B-C split two games with the Thoroughbreds during the conference season - falling 1-0 on March 16, but rebounding for an 8-0 win in the rematch on April 2. South Aiken is coming off a 1-0 win against St. James.

Mid-Carolina (21-3) pounded Palmetto 11-1 in the Class 2A Upper State opener on Saturday. It was the 17th win in a row for the Rebels. M-C hosts defending Upper State champion Chesnee, which is looking to give long-time coach Dean Jones a state championship in his final season at the Eagles helm. Chesnee blasted Walhalla 17-2 in the first round.

The B-C softball team (27-4) hosts Georgetown in a Class 3A Lower State elimination game. The Bearcats suffered a 4-2 first-round loss at St. James on Saturday.

Otherwise, the White Knoll, Blythewood, Sumter, Lugoff-Elgin and Chapin baseball teams hit the road, as do the White Knoll and Chapin softball squads.

White Knoll, surprising Blythewood and Lugoff-Elgin are coming off first round wins.

White Knoll, 27-1 and riding a 25-game winning streak, blasted Sumter 15-9 in the Class 4A Lower State opening round and heads to the Lowcountry for a showdown with Wando in Mt. Pleasant. It will be a confrontation between the top-ranked teams in the state. The host Warriors, who beat Summerville 5-3 on Saturday, occupy the top spot in the big-school poll, followed by the T-Wolves.

Sumter (21-8) faces an elimination game at Summerville

Blythewood (15-13) cruised by Region 4 rival Rock Hill, 7-1, in the Class 4A Upper State opener, and travels to face Byrnes in Duncan tonight. The host Rebels nipped Northwestern 1-0 in Saturday’s other first-round game.

Lugoff-Elgin (23-4) defeated visiting Greenville 8-3 in the first round of the Class 3A Upper State tournament on Saturday, and heads to Greenville tonight for a game against J.L. Mann that will put on team in the US driver’s seat.

Weary Chapin (20-7) is facing elimination tonight at Greenville. It will be the Eagles’ fourth game in five days tonight at Greenville. Chapin need two games to dispatch Region 4 rival A.C. Flora in the finals of the District 4 tournament on Thursday, and opened the Class 3A Upper State gathering with a 9-3 loss to J.L. Mann.

The top-ranked White Knoll softball team (27-4) dropped a 2-1 decision to Wando in the first round of the Class 4A Lower State tournament. The Timberwolves head back to the Lowcountry tonight for an elimination game in Goose Creek against Stratford.

Chapin (24-5) suffered a Class 3A Upper State first-round loss to J.L. Mann for the second year in a row. This time, the Eagles fell 8-3 to the defending state champion Patriots in Greenville, and have an even longer road trip in store tonight. Chapin plays at Daniel and is hoping to avoid a 0-2 Upper State showing for the second year in a row.
