Holloway leaning against walk-on option
Appeal at Mississippi set for Wednesday

Murphy Holloway will officially ask Mississippi on Wednesday to let him transfer to USC or Clemson. If the request is not granted, the Irmo native said he will “most likely” not walk on to either school.
The option exists for Holloway to pay his own way at USC or Clemson for a year, and then go on scholarship for his final two years of eligibility. But he downplayed that possibility on Tuesday afternoon.
“I wouldn’t want to pay to go to school,” Holloway said.
But Holloway was remaining optimistic. He did not want to go into details of the appeal, other than it will be over the phone.
“I’m hoping for the best. I’m hoping for both schools,” Holloway said.
Holloway announced two weeks ago that he was leaving Mississippi, where he started and averaged 10.1 points and 7.6 rebounds as a sophomore. He requested the transfer to be closer to home for his young daughter and sick mother.
But Mississippi declined to release him to either Clemson or South Carolina. The denial to USC was not surprising considering it is an SEC rival, but Mississippi has not publicly said why it did not release him to Clemson.
He was released to smaller in-state schools, such as Coastal Carolina, College of Charleston, Furman, Wofford and Winthrop. Holloway said Tuesday that transferring to one of those schools – he has been in contact with Coastal Carolina – remains a possibility.
