Reserve back Burns leaving program

Published: July 8, 2010

South Carolina reserve defensive back Jarrett Burns has left the program after being told his scholarship likely would not be renewed, according to sources close to the situation.

Burns, a redshirt sophomore from Huntsville, Ala., played in nine games in 2009, primarily on special teams. Attempts to reach Burns on Thursday were unsuccessful.

USC media relations director Steve Fink said he could not confirm BurnsÂ’ departure. Gamecocks coach Steve Spurrier was out of town.

The 6-fooot-2, 187-pound Burns was credited with five tackles last season, including three in a win against S.C. State. He tore a ligament in his finger against Tennessee and missed the rest of the regular season.

Burns was listed as a third-team spur headed into spring practice, but was not included on the post-spring depth chart. --Joseph Person
