A Columbia area woman who was killed early Saturday morning while walking on U.S. 321 has been identified as Trudy Rosenna Morris, 51.

Morris was walking on U.S. 321 near the I-20 overpass about four miles north of Columbia when she was struck by an oncoming vehicle about 5 a.m., said Richland County Coroner Gary Watts.

The driver stopped and did not leave the scene, Watts said. “It was not a hit and run.”

S.C. Highway Patrol trooper Billy Elder said his agency is investigating.

Lonzonne Chappell, 32, of Winnsboro, was the driver of the 1998 Dodge SUV that struck Morris, said Elder. Chappell was wearing a seat belt and was not injured in the incident, Elder said.

Morris was crossing the road when struck, Elder said.

Watts said tests will be conducted to see if Morris was under the influence of alcohol or drugs when struck.
