Ex-DMV worker accused of taking more than $300,000

A former employee of the S.C. Department of Motor Vehicles is facing charges in connection with the embezzlement of hundreds of thousands in public money, the S.C. Law Enforcement Division announced Tuesday.

Wendy Gaskins, 39, of Cedar Hill Lane, West Columbia, is charged with embezzlement of public funds. According to a SLED arrest warrant, while previously employed as a facilities manager with DMV,the Department of Motor Vehicles, Gaskins is accused of allegedly stealing more than $300,000 in public funds for personal use.

Additionally, according to SLED, Gaskins is accused of devising a fictitious construction company known as “J. Creech Construction” and depositing the stolen funds into a checking account for the company. The stolen money was supposed to pay for various DMV projects, a news release said. Gaskins turned herself in to SLED agents Tuesday.
