Area briefs: Myrtle Beach knocks off Waccamaw in volleyball

PAWLEYS ISLAND -- The Myrtle Beach volleyball handed the Waccamaw Warriors their first loss of the season winning 3-0 by the scores of 25-21, 26-24 and 25-13 on Tuesday night.

Waccamaw entered the match as the No. 2 team in Class AA in the South Carolina High School Volleyball Coaches Poll, which was released earlier in the day. Waccamaw had been No. 3 in the previous poll.

It was the Seahawks’ season opener while Waccamaw fell to 2-1.

High school volleyball

MONCKS CORNER Georgetown’s Adreanne Singleton had eight kills in a win over Timberland and added another in a loss to Goose Creek as the Georgetown volleyball team split a pair of matches at Timberland High. The Bulldogs (2-1) beat Timberland 25-23, 25-22 and fell to Goose Creek 13-25, 13-25.

West Brunswick (N.C.) 3, (at) North Brunswick (N.C.) 1 | The Trojans won in four games (23-25, 25-13, 25-14, 28-26).

Kayla Padgett had 18 kills, one block, four digs, nine service points and two aces, Paige Ward had five kills and six blocks, Katie King had 14 service points, Mary Morgan Inions had five kills, one block, two digs, 14 service points and three aces, Jasmine Jackson had nine kills, eight blocks, three digs, 15 service points and six aces for West Brunswick (3-1, 1-0 Waccamaw 2-A, 3-A).

High school cross country

PAWLEYS ISLAND Zack Hensel was the top individual as Carolina Forest won a four-team meet at Waccamaw High.

The Panthers placed six runners in the top 10.

Carolina Forest also won the girls event, which included three teams. Waccamaw’s Grace Barnett was the individual winner.

CONWAY | St. James swept the boys and girls team competition while North Myrtle Beach’s Benjamin Jenerette won the girls title and St. James’ Billy Krier won the boys title, each by more than a minute over the second-place finishers.

(At) Carolina Forest 181, St. James 235 | Jennifer Karl shot a 2-over 38 to earn medalist honors and lead the Panhters (1-0) to a win over the Sharks (0-1) at Myrtle Beach National’s South Course.

College volleyball

Coastal Carolina 3, (at) Campbell 1 | The Chanticleers dropped the first set before taking the final three to improve to 2-5 on the season.in a 21-25, 25-16, 25-21 and 25-21 victory over the Camels (1-7).

CCU senior Chelsy Kimes had 22 kills and 11 digs for her fifth double-double in a row and Erika Lightsey tallied 13 kills and 10 digs for her first career double-double. Other notable performances for CCU included Lauren Alejo with 29 assists and Kelsie Mauck with 20, while Lindsay Gill led the defense with 24 digs.

Coastal will next host the Comfort Suites Coastal Carolina Invitational on Friday and Saturday at Kimbel Arena. The Chants play The Citadel at 6 p.m. Friday in their first home match of the season and then take on Norfolk State and USC Upstate on Saturday.
