Richland County investigators have charged a man with murder in connection with the weekend slaying of an 83-year-old woman.
Sammy Lynch, 34, was arrested this morning after he confessed to the crime, Sheriff Leon Lott announced today during a news conference. Lynch is accused of killing his neighbor, Evelyn Harbin, sometime between the late evening of Sept. 2 and the early morning of Sept. 3. Lott said Lynch broke into Harbin’s home with the intent of stealing things he could sell or trade for drugs.
When Harbin discovered Lynch, a struggle ensued and Lynch was killed, Lott said. Harbin then left the house, but returned a few hours later to steal more items and attempt to cover up the crime, Lott said. Lott said Lynch used Harbin’s cell phone to call an online dating service.
