CC notes: Midlands girls runners pack Top 15

A number of Midlands runners turned in outstanding performances in the girls Championship Division race at the annual Coaches Classic meet on Saturday at Sandhills Research Park.

Nine Midlands entries finished in the top 16 with A.C. Flora eighth-grader Maryann Riley leading the way with a third-place finish and a time of 19 minutes, 34 seconds.

Airport sophomore Megan Stahlberger (5th, 20:02), Dreher freshman Ashbrook Gwinn (6th, 20:13), Dutch Fork sophomore Amelia Syfert (10th, 20:24), Heathwood Hall’s Brooke Grice (12th, 20:30) and Sydney Ellen (14th, 20:46), Pelion sophomore Nevada Minard (15th, 20:48) and Spring Valley senior Emily Bakaj (16th, 20:53) also turned in high-end performances.

The top area individuals in the boys Championship Division were Blythewood junior William Epps (14th, 17:13) and Heathwood Hall senior West Summers (17:18).

On the team side, the Pelion girls and Blythewood boys were the only Midlands entries to crack the Top 10.

Pelion scored 362 points and placed 10th. Blythewood scored 331 and also finished 10th.
