SOUTH POINTE vs. FAIRFIELD CENTRAL

Site: E.K. McLendon Stadium. Time: 8 p.m.

Storyline: South Pointe, ranked No. 1 in the Class 3A S.C. Prep Writers’ Poll, is 6-1 with its only loss to intra-city rival Northwestern, 42-20, in Week 1, while Fairfield Central stands at 7-0 and ranked No. 3. It’s the first big game of the Region 4-3A campaign. SP, FC and Chester all stand at 2-0. The contenders will sort things out over the final three weeks. South Pointe plays Chester in Week 9, while Fairfield Central closes out the regular season at Chester the follow week.

South Pointe notes: Since the Stallions’ proud and talented defense yielded 69 points in back-to-back games against offensive juggernaughts Northwestern and Independence (NC), things have returned to form. South Point has allowed 27 points in its last four games. The big-timers to watch are blue-chip defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney and Gerald Davis … The Stallions are also picking up the pace on the attack. The top producer is RB Tay Hicklin, who has 507 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns on the books … Kicker Landon Ard (30 PAT, 3 FG, 43.0 punt average) is another key component.

Fairfield Central notes: This is the third time in school history that FC has won seven straight games out of the gate. The last two times it happened (1996 and 1997), the Griffins went on to win state championships – one on 4A under Buddy Pough, one in 3A under Tony Felder … The Griffins kept the beat going last week with a 39-22 win at York. Devontre Parnell was the Griffins headliner with a 90-yard interception return for a touchdown and an 85-yard kickoff return score … Quarterback Danny Miller has been outstanding to date. The senior veteran is 80-for 117 passing for 1,583 yards and 18 touchdowns with just two interceptions. The deep receiving corps features Chris Alston (19-639-10), NaJahwan McKinstry (19-379-3), Shaquille Young (15-257-4) and Dana Macklin (14-201-1). The balanced running game is led by Jimmy Walker (85-433-6) and Jarvis Kennedy (63-329-5) … Ralph Cooper (81 tackles, 7 TFL) is the leading hit man on defense.

Series history: South Pointe prevailed 43-12 in the only and only meeting of the teams in 2008.
