Mid-Carolina’s quest for its first region championship in 19 years continues on Friday at one of the more venerable stadiums in South Carolina – Woodruff’s Willie Varner Stadium.

The Rebels stand at 8-0 for the first time since 1989, and is 3-0 in Region 2-2A play. Woodruff (5-3, 3-0) has lost only to tough 3A teams Greenville, Clinton and Union County.

M-C’s last outright region title came in 1991 when it went 5-1 in 4-2A games. The last time the Rebels finished in first place with an unbeaten region record was in the state championship season in 1985.

Mid-Carolina’s attack is ground-based. The Rebels have 2,500 yards on the books and average 312.5 yards per game. Clarence Turner (103-771-7), Nick Sims-Metts (66-499-10) and Devin Holland (47-404-6) form the core of the running game.

Woodruff is quite productive, as well. The Wolverines average 418.3 and 36.6 points a game. The real difference is Woodruff presents a more balanced problem for the Rebels defense.

Shun Tribble has 1,248 yards rushing, Ryan Perkins is 121-for-220 passing for 1,839 yards and 17 touchdowns and B.J. Johnson is top top receiver with 39 catches for 630 yards.

Friday will mark the first-ever regular season meeting of the teams. Woodruff is 2-0 vs. the Rebels in state playoff games – winning 35-14 in 1983, 10-0 in 1997.
