Lexington tuned up for the Class 4A girls state cross country meet by taking first place at the Mid-State qualifier on Saturday at Clemson Research Center.
The third-ranked Wildcats placed four runners in the top 10 and finished with a winning total of 39 points, well ahead the 65 points compiled by runner-up Irmo. Dutch Fork and Spring Valley were the other Midlands teams to emerge with state meet spots.
Lexington won the MS qualifier and had the individual champion, as well, for the second year in a row. Last year, the Wildcats scored 34 points and seventh-grader Haylee Love claimed solo honors. Last weekend, sophomore Meri Heneage led the Lexington pack with a winning time of 19:51.75, while Love was second on the team and third in the race with a 19:55.55.

Katelin Killman (5th, 20:00.05), Val Feliciano (10th, 20:39.15) and Allie allari (20th, 21:02.65) rounded out the Wildcats scoring lineup. The strong Lexington lineup also included Sarah Hendrix (23rd, 21:04.70) and Cameron Shackleford (24th, 21:05.40), whose solid efforts did not factor into the scoring formula.
Irmo tuned up for next week’s Top 10 state bid with a fine performance at the qualifier. Janay Chisholm was the Yellow Jackets leader, finishing fourth in 19:56.90, followed by Mary Grace Hutchinson (7th, 20:13.50), Savannah Radenbaugh (11th, 20:42.70), Aisha Maddox (18th, 20:57.0) and Anna Bradford (25th, 21:07.70).
Amelia Syfert (6th), 20:00.60) and Taylor Quindlen (9th, 20:16.0) led Dutch Fork to a state spot with a fourth-place finish (156 points).
Spring Valley made the state cut for the 12th consecutive season. The Vikings, led by senior Emily Bakaj (13th, 20:51.35), grabbed the last available invitation by finishing in sixth place (198 points).
