November 4, 2010

COLUMBIA vs. INDIAN LAND

Site: Indian Land. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: The Capitals (6-4) open on the road for the third year in a row against an Indian Land team that matches its best-ever regular season showing in its first year playing up in lass 2A … The key for Columbia is the health of QB Ky Tyler, who is 70-for-125 passing for 1,357 yards and 15 touchdowns. McArtha Thompson passed for 151 yards, ran for 101 and accounted for four TDs in a 35-6 win over Keenan last week … RB DeErik Bradley (158-866-11) and WR Casey Gladney (40-727-7) are the other offensive leaders. Justin Muller (106 tackles and Thompson (7 sacks) are stout on the defensive side … QB Rondreas Truesdale and RB Breyon Williams make the IL attack go. Truesdale has 603 yards passing, and 1,376 yards rushing on the books. Williams has piled up 1,114 yards on just 114 carries. Truesdale had 17 TD runs, Williams 11.

CHERAW vs. BATESBURG-LEESVILLE

Site: Panther Stadium. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: The Panthers (7-3) saw their Region 3 championship hopes go up in smoke in a 31-0 loss to Strom Thurmond last week. Technically, the teams share the title, but B-L goes into the playoffs as the No. 2 seed … Cheraw (3-7) was dealt its first losing record since 2000, but the Braves made the playoff cut for the 10th year in a row … B-L has been a virtual first-round lock for nearly two decades. The Panthers are 16-2 in playoff openers since 1992.

PENDLETON vs. MID-CAROLINA

Site: Lon Armstrong Stadium. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: The Rebels (9-1) closed out their best regular season since 1989 with a 27-7 win over archrival Newberry. The idea now it to advance at least past the second round of the Class 2A state playoffs for the first time sine 1996 … On the other hand, Pendleton (5-5) enters postseason play with its worst regular season grade since 2002 … M-C won the only previous encounter with the Bulldogs from Anderson County – a 27-6 decision in the first round of the playoffs in 1997.

GILBERT vs. CENTRAL

Site: William D. Johnson Stadium, Pageland. Time: 7:30 p.m.

Game notes: The Indians snuck into the playoffs despite a 2-8 record, thanks to a 34-24 win over Eau Claire in the final week of the regular season. RB Clark Mathias and QB Connor Owings led an improved offensive performance. Mathias ran for 115 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries and Owings was 4-for-5 passing for 102 yards and two TDs … The joy should be short lived. The reward is a road trip to Pageland to face the mighty Central Eagles, who are 10-0 and primed for yet another state title bid … FYI, Central stands at 345-97 overall, has played in nine state championship games and won four titles since the consolidated school opened in 1976.

SWANSEA vs. WOODLAND

Site: Woodland. Time: 7:30 p.m..

Game notes: The Tigers (5-5) clinched their first state playoff berth in five years with a Region 5 win over Edisto in the regular season finale in conjunction with Pelion’s loss to Wade Hampton … Woodland, led by senior quarterback Robert Johnson, went 8-2 – the best regular season record since the consolidated school opened in upper Dorchester County in 1999.
