3A: Fairfield Central at Union County

FAIRFIELD CENTRAL vs. UNION COUNTY

Fairfield Central notes: The Griffins (10-1) opened the Class 3A state playoffs with a 38-16 win over Berea behind a punishing running attack. QB Danny Miller throw only four passes, completing three for 48 yards and one touchdown. Jimmy Walker paced the 372-yard rushing assault with 167 yards and one TD on 23 carries … The defense limited the visitors from Greenville County to 211 offensive yards. Ralph Cooper was credited with 16 tackles and he blocked a PAT kick. Devontre Parnell had one interception and returned a fumble 82 yards for a touchdown … To date, Cooper has 140 tackles, 23 TFL and 8 sacks on the books. On the other side, Miller is 113-for-183 passing for 1,987 yards and 20 touchdowns with just four interceptions.

Union County notes: The Yellow Jackets (8-3) opened the playoffs with a rousing 42-16 win over Pickens. QB Keiston Smith had 165 yards passing, 107 yards rushing, threw two scoring passes and had one touchdown run … For the season, Smith has 1,294 yards passing and 16 TD tosses, plus 401 yards and six score by land. RB Michael Johnson (143-892-8) and WR Victor Ruth (27-736-11) are UC’s other top offensive threats … Union County closed the regular season with seven straight win after getting off to a 1-2 start. It was the best regular season showing for the Yellow Jackets since the school consolidated with Jonesville and was renamed in 2007. Former Former Jonesville coach David Lipsey is in his fourth season running the show at UC … The real glory days for Union football came between 1999 and 2002 when the Jackets posted a 54-6 record, advanced to the 3A championship game four times and claimed top honors three times under former Batesburg-Leesville coach Mike Anthony.

Playoff history: Fairfield Central is 27-16 in playoffs matters with the highlight being back-to-back, 15-0, state championship years in the 1990s. The fun began with a perfect run to the 4A Division II championship in 1996 under Buddy Pough, followed by a flawless march to 3A honors under Tony Felder … Union stands at 57-24 in postseason play since 1970, and has five state championship trophies on display.
