Alex Morales opens senior season in style

Defending state champion Alex Morales was the Lexington story at the elite Southern Slam wrestling tournament last weekend in Greenville.

Morales, who emerged with the Class 4A title at 171 pounds last season, won all four of his bouts on the way the Slam win at 171. The Wildcats senior star, the No. 1 seed at weight, prevailed in a 7-2 decision over No. 2 seed Matt Cusack of Davie County (NC).

As a team the Wildcats finished 17th out of 37 teams with 95.5 points. Lexington was missing veteran standouts Scott Tyndale and Steven Steinbacher.

Daniel Bannister, Walker Barfield and Cody Bonham were the other Wildcats to emerge with place finishes. Bannister went 5-2 and finished fifth at 160. Barfield bounced back from a first-round loss to go 5-2 and place seventh at 130. Bonham’s 4-3 showing at 125 was good for eighth place.
