Hosts prevail again at Cardinal Holiday Classic

Host Cardinal Newman edged Bishop England and Columbia for the team championship at the Cardinal Holiday Classic wrestling tournament last weekend.

The Cardinals finished with 187 points, two more than Bishop England, to claim first place again at the 16-team event for the third year in a row. Columbia’s 176 points was good for third place. Gilbert and Mid-Carolina both scored 133 points and ended up in a three-way tie for fifth place.

The individual Midlands star was senior B.J. Gibbs, who rolled to the heavyweight championship and was named the tournament upper weight Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Nathan Hayes (130), Kyle Maitland (160), Jake Wilson (171) and Billy Solomon (215) were the CN individual champions, and Cole McCarter was the runner-up at 119. Nick Palevich secured the consolation title at 152.

Columbia’s strong showing was headlined by individual triumphs by Randy Medina (125), Nate Harper (140) and Anthony Thompson (145). The other Capitals highlights came from Davonne Montgomery (2nd, 135), DaVonte Graham (2nd, 285), Jacob Anderson (3rd, 160) and Tariq Muhhomed (3rd, 103).
