The OnStar navigation system in a stolen Cadillac led Richland County Sheriff's deputies Thursday to capture a car thief.
Leon Thomas Taylor, 31, was charged with motor vehicle theft Thursday after he allegedly stole a car from a driveway on Windsor Lake Boulevard, the sheriff's department reported. The victim was loading his car when he saw it rolling backward out of the driveway. The victim tried to grab the door but Thomas allegedly sped away.
Once deputies pinpointed the 2008 Cadillac's location, Thomas led them on a chase through the city before he eventually was arrested on Plowden Road near the Columbia Owens Field-Downtown Airport.
During the chase, Thomas allegedly hit another car, causing $12,000 in damages. That incident is under investigation by the S.C. Highway Patrol, said Deputy Curtis Wilson, a sheriff's department spokesman.
