A coalition opposed to South Carolina’s latest immigration legislation is sponsoring two events this week.

A panel discussion sponsored by USC Students Allied for Better Immigration Opportunities will be held from 6:30-8:30 p.m. today at USC’s HESC 114 at Greene and Sumter streets.

On Wednesday, a “People of Faith Against SB 20” prayer vigil will be held at 7:30 p.m. on the north side of the State House, facing Gervais Street. The prayer vigil is sponsored by the S.C. Immigration Coalition and Church World Service.

Video from around the world

The discussion and prayer vigil are part of “20 Against 20,” a series of 20 events held around the state to protest Senate Bill 20, which would require law enforcement officers to check the immigration status of anyone who is detained and suspected to be an illegal immigrant. The bill also would create a statewide Illegal Immigration Enforcement Unit under the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
