Richland County officials gathered Monday with community leaders in Ridgewood to highlight the benefits of federal housing programs.
Over the past nine years, the county has devoted more than $3 million in U.S. Housing and Urban Development money to build and rehabilitate nine homes, put in a park, install public sewage and make other improvements, said Valeria Jackson, director of community development.
Builder Brian South said government financing is essential to make an impact in blighted neighborhoods. He gave tours of a three-bedroom, two-bathroom home on Dixie Avenue that will sell for less than $110,000. The county contracted with South to build four homes and renovate a fifth.
